Zagora or Merzouga: Which Desert Trip Should You Choose?

Zagora is closer to Marrakech, Merzouga has the tall dunes of Erg Chebbi. Distances, what each desert really offers, and a third option many travellers miss.

From Marrakech, the two names you hear most for a night in the desert are Zagora and Merzouga. They are not the same kind of trip. Zagora is the closer one, an oasis town in the Draa Valley with dunes nearby. Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, one of the great dune fields of Morocco, much farther east. This guide compares them with the figures from our own trips, then adds the option that sits between them.

How far are they from Marrakech?

  • Zagora: about 365 km, roughly 6.5 hours of driving each way over the High Atlas and down the Draa Valley.
  • Merzouga: about 550 km, 8 to 9 hours of driving, usually split with a night in the Dades or Todra valleys.

That difference shapes everything else. Zagora fits a two-day round trip from Marrakech with one night in camp. Merzouga needs four days or more from Marrakech, or a crossing of the country that starts or ends in Fes, about 340 km away.

Zagora: the desert in two days

Zagora is the last large town before the dunes on the Draa River. Our two-day tour leaves Marrakech early, crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at Ait Ben Haddou and in Ouarzazate, then follows the palm groves of the Draa Valley to the dunes near Zagora. You ride a camel into the dunes at sunset, eat dinner by the fire with Berber music and sleep in a camp with private tents. On the second morning you watch the sunrise, ride back to the vehicle and are in Marrakech by early evening.

Is Zagora worth it? If you have two days and want a real night in the desert, yes: you see the Atlas, a UNESCO kasbah and the Draa Valley on the way, and the camel ride and the camp are the same experience you would have farther away. What you do not get is a sea of high dunes. The dunes near Zagora are a first taste of the Sahara rather than a vast erg; if tall dunes are the point of your trip, look further.

From Ouarzazate, Zagora is also a long day trip: about 165 km each way, ten to eleven hours in all, with the old Koranic library and the green pottery workshops of Tamegroute and an optional short camel ride at the dunes.

Merzouga: the classic dunes of Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi is a ridge of orange sand about 22 km long and 5 km wide, with dunes up to roughly 150 m high, rising straight out of the stony plain next to Merzouga. A tarred road reaches the village, camps stand in the hollows between the dunes, and the camel ride from Merzouga can be short. The scenery is exactly what most people picture when they think of the Sahara.

The trade-offs are distance and popularity. Merzouga has many camps and guesthouses, and in busy months you share the dunes with other groups. Once you are there, though, the desert is easy: a sunset camel ride of about two hours starts from €65 per person, and the overnight camel trek with dinner, a camp and a sunrise ride back from €120 per person.

Side by side

  • Time from Marrakech: Zagora fits two days; Merzouga needs four days or more, or a route that ends in Fes.
  • Dunes: Zagora offers a first taste; Merzouga has the tall ridge of Erg Chebbi.
  • The road: both cross the High Atlas; Zagora follows the Draa Valley, Merzouga the Dades and Todra valleys.
  • Best for: Zagora for a short trip from Marrakech; Merzouga for classic high dunes, or a Fes to Marrakech journey.

The third option: Erg Chigaga

If Zagora feels too short and Merzouga too far, look at Erg Chigaga. Our three-day tour from Marrakech spends the first night in a riad in Zagora, visits the potters of Tamegroute, then drives through M'Hamid and 60 km off-road to the largest dune field of the Moroccan Sahara you can reach by road. You ride a camel into the dunes at sunset, sleep in a nomad-style tent and return by the Iriqui dry lake. It starts from €250 per person in a group of six, and it is the one desert trip of three days that does not feel rushed.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for both. Our desert trips are planned from October to April. Summer in the Draa Valley and at Merzouga is very hot, and winter nights in camp are cold, so bring a warm layer.

Quick answers

Can I do Zagora in one day from Marrakech?

It is not a good idea: Zagora is about 365 km away, roughly 6.5 hours each way. A two-day trip with one night in camp is the shortest version that feels like the desert.

Are there tall dunes near Zagora?

No. The dunes there are a first taste of the Sahara. If tall dunes are the point of your trip, look at Erg Chebbi at Merzouga or Erg Chigaga.

What does it cost once I am in Merzouga?

A sunset camel ride of about two hours starts from €65 per person, and the overnight camel trek with dinner and a camp from €120 per person. Getting to Merzouga is not included.

What if I have three days?

Choose Erg Chigaga through Zagora: our three-day tour from Marrakech starts from €250 per person in a group of six.

How to decide

Start with your days. Two days from Marrakech: Zagora. Three days: Erg Chigaga through Zagora. Four days or more, or a trip that links Fes and Marrakech: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Tell the team your dates and your group, and we will suggest the route.
