Marrakech to Merzouga: Route, Driving Time and the Best Way to Go

How far Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are from Marrakech, the road across the Atlas, where to stop for the night and which trips make the journey worth it.

Merzouga is the village at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the best-known dune field in Morocco. From Marrakech it is about 550 km by road, which means 8 to 9 hours of driving without long stops. That single number decides most of the planning: it is too far for a comfortable return in two days, and the road itself is one of the most beautiful in the country. This guide explains the route, where to break the journey and the trips we run that reach the dunes.

How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?

Count about 550 km and 8 to 9 hours behind the wheel. From Fes the distance is shorter, roughly 340 km, which is why many itineraries link the two cities through the desert: start in one, sleep in the dunes, finish in the other. If you only have Marrakech as a base, plan the desert as a loop of four days or more, or end your trip in Fes.

The route across the Atlas

The road leaves Marrakech for the High Atlas and climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. On the southern side it drops towards Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village listed by UNESCO, and reaches Ouarzazate. From there the road runs east through the Skoura palm grove and the Dades Valley, known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon with walls about 300 m high. The last stretch crosses stony desert plains until the orange ridge of Erg Chebbi appears on the horizon.

  • Tizi n'Tichka pass: the highest point of the road, with views over the Atlas valleys.
  • Ait Ben Haddou: a stop of one or two hours to cross the river and climb to the granary.
  • Dades Valley: red cliffs, kasbahs and the folded rocks nicknamed the Monkey Fingers.
  • Todra Gorge: a short walk into the narrowest part of the canyon.

Where to stop for the night

Most travellers break the journey with a night in the Dades or Todra valleys. It turns one very long day into two reasonable ones and lets you walk in the gorges in the morning light. On our five-day tour from Marrakech the first night is in a traditional guesthouse in the Dades Valley; the second day passes the Todra Gorge and reaches Merzouga in time for a camel ride into the dunes at sunset.

Is there a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Three-day return trips from Marrakech to Merzouga exist, but the arithmetic is hard: two days of 8 to 9 hours on the road around a single night in the dunes. That is why our own Erg Chebbi programmes take four or five days. If three days is all you have, a desert closer to Marrakech gives you more time on the sand: the dunes of Erg Chigaga are reached in a three-day tour through the Draa Valley, and the dunes near Zagora in two days.

Our ways to reach Erg Chebbi

  • From Fes to Marrakech in 4 days: through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to Erg Chebbi, two nights and a free day in a luxury camp, then the Todra Gorge, the Draa Valley and Ait Ben Haddou. From €515 per person, and it can also run from Marrakech to Fes.
  • A 5-day loop from Marrakech: a night in the Dades Valley, a sunset camel ride into Erg Chebbi, then west across the Draa Valley for two nights at Erg Chigaga. It links the two great dune fields of Morocco; the price is sent on request.
  • Already in Merzouga: a two-hour sunset camel ride from €65 per person, or the overnight camel trek with dinner, music and a sunrise ride back from €120 per person. Getting to Merzouga is not included, but the team can arrange it.

Driving yourself, or with a driver-guide?

The roads are tarred all the way to Merzouga, so a rental car is possible. What a driver-guide adds is the time you would otherwise spend reading the road: stops at viewpoints and villages you would miss, the walk in the gorges, the arrangement with the camp and the camel handlers at the edge of the dunes. On our private tours the vehicle and the guide stay with your group for the whole journey and the pace is yours.

When to go

At Erg Chebbi the most pleasant months are March to May and September to November. Winter days are mild but the nights in camp are cold, so pack a warm layer. Summer days are very hot, and camel rides then run early in the morning or at dusk. Our tours to the dunes are planned from October to April.

Quick answers

Is the road to Merzouga tarred all the way?

Yes, which is why a rental car is possible. What a driver-guide adds is the time you would otherwise spend reading the road, and the arrangements at the edge of the dunes.

Where should I break the journey?

Most travellers sleep in the Dades or Todra valleys. It turns one very long day into two reasonable ones and lets you walk in the gorges in the morning light.

Can I do a return trip in three days?

It exists, but you would spend two days of 8 to 9 hours on the road around one night in the dunes. Erg Chigaga in three days, or Zagora in two, gives you more time on the sand.

In short

Marrakech to Merzouga is a long but rewarding road: about 550 km over the Atlas, best split with a night in the Dades or Todra valleys. Give it four days or more, or cross the country and finish in Fes. Tell the team your dates and the size of your group, and we will suggest the route that fits.
