Shaded path through a dense palm grove in an oasis

The Draa Valley, from Agdz to the Sahara

The Draa is the longest river in Morocco, about 1,100 km from the Atlas to the Atlantic, though it only flows above ground for part of the year. Its palm-lined oasis valley, which runs for more than 200 km from Agdz to M'Hamid, is dotted with ruined kasbahs, villages and date groves.

Guide

How to get there

The valley starts about 70 km south of Ouarzazate and follows the road to Zagora and M'Hamid. It is on the way for every tour that heads to Erg Chigaga or the dunes near Zagora.

Ways to visit

Drive it slowly, stopping at Agdz for the kasbahs and market, at Tamnougalt, and at Zagora and Tamegroute for potters and the old Koranic library. A day trip from Ouarzazate reaches Agdz and the first palm groves.
