Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi: Which Sahara Desert Is Right for You?

Two famous dune fields, two very different trips. An honest comparison of access, scenery, crowds and travel time from Marrakech.

Most visitors choose between two dune fields: Erg Chebbi near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga near Mhamid. Both are the real Sahara, with orange sand, camels and silent nights, yet the trips are not the same. This guide compares them without hype so you can pick the one that fits your time and your idea of the desert.

Erg Chebbi: the classic, easy to reach

Erg Chebbi rises right behind the village of Merzouga in the east of the country. A tarred road brings you to the edge of the dunes, so camps are close to the village and a camel ride to them can be short. The dunes are a tall, photogenic ridge that is easy to understand: you see it, you climb it, you watch the sunset.

The trade-off is popularity. Merzouga has many camps and guesthouses, and in busy months you will share the dunes with other groups. From Marrakech it is a very long drive, so it suits itineraries of four days or more, or trips that continue towards Fes.

Erg Chigaga: wilder and farther from everything

Erg Chigaga lies south of Mhamid and is a much wider sea of dunes. The last part of the journey leaves the tarmac and crosses a stony plain by 4x4, which is part of the adventure. There are fewer camps, little light and no village at the edge, so the night sky is exceptional and the silence is deeper.

The route from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas, passes kasbahs such as Ait Ben Haddou and follows the Draa Valley, so the road itself is part of the trip. That is why a three-day programme from Marrakech works well here.

Side by side

  • Access: Chebbi by tarred road; Chigaga by 4x4 on the last stretch.
  • Scenery: Chebbi is a high, compact ridge; Chigaga is a vast dune field with space to walk.
  • Crowds: Chebbi is busier; Chigaga is quieter, with fewer camps.
  • From Marrakech: both need long drives; the Chigaga route fits three days through the Draa Valley.
  • Best for: Chebbi if you combine Fes or have four days or more; Chigaga for a remote night and a road with views.

Is Erg Chigaga worth it?

If you want the feeling of being far from everything, yes. You trade a little comfort and a few hours of driving for space and darkness. If your priority is the shortest possible walk to the dunes, Erg Chebbi is simpler.

How to get to Erg Chigaga

Erg Chigaga is about 600 km from Marrakech by road, usually driven over two days with a night in the Draa Valley. The last 60 km from M'Hamid are off-road, so you need a 4x4 with a driver who knows the piste. Walkers reach it differently: our long treks from M'Hamid cross several dune fields on foot with a camel caravan and arrive at Erg Chigaga after several days. Erg Chebbi is easier to reach on your own: Merzouga is about 550 km from Marrakech, a drive of 8 to 9 hours on tarred roads, or roughly 340 km from Fes. Our guide Marrakech to Merzouga details that road.

The camps

At Erg Chebbi, camps stand in the hollows between the dunes, from simple tents to luxury tents with private bathrooms; on our four-day tour from Fes you spend two nights in a large canvas tent with its own bathroom. At Erg Chigaga there are fewer camps and they feel more isolated. Our three-day tour sleeps in a nomad-style tent, and the five-day tour via Skoura spends two nights in a comfortable camp with private tents, beds and bathrooms. Whatever the camp, dinner by the fire and the night sky are the same.

Can you see both?

Yes, on our five-day private tour from Marrakech. You sleep in the Dades Valley, ride a camel into Erg Chebbi at sunset, then drive west across the Draa Valley to Erg Chigaga for two nights, and return over the Anti-Atlas. Day three is a long driving day, which is the price of seeing the two great dune fields of Morocco in one trip.

What about Zagora?

Zagora is closer to Marrakech than either, about 365 km, and its nearby dunes fit a two-day trip. They are a first taste of the desert rather than a sea of high dunes. We compare the options in Zagora or Merzouga.

Quick answers

Which dune field has the taller dunes?

Erg Chebbi is a compact ridge about 22 km long and 5 km wide, with dunes up to roughly 150 m. Erg Chigaga is a much wider field with more room to walk, rather than one tall wall of sand.

Do I need a 4x4?

For Erg Chigaga, yes: the last 60 km from M'Hamid are off-road, with a driver who knows the piste. Erg Chebbi is reached by a tarred road.

Which one is quieter?

Erg Chigaga. It has fewer camps, little light and no village at its edge, so the night sky is darker and the silence deeper.

How many days do I need?

Three days from Marrakech for Erg Chigaga through the Draa Valley; four days or more for Erg Chebbi; five days if you want to see both.

How to decide

Count your days, then your appetite for driving. With three days from Marrakech, choose Erg Chigaga through the Draa Valley. With four or five, both become possible. Tell the team your dates and your group and we will suggest the route; the trip below is our three-day option to Erg Chigaga.
