The Sahara in Morocco is a year-round destination, but the same dune feels very different in January and in July. The right month depends on what you want: comfortable walking, clear night skies or the fewest visitors. Here is how the seasons really feel on a desert trip from Marrakech.
Spring and autumn: the safest choice
March to May and September to November give the best balance. Days are warm rather than extreme, pleasant for walking on the dunes in the morning and late afternoon, and nights stay mild enough to sleep comfortably in a camp. These are also the busiest months, so ask for your dates early.
Two small cautions. In spring the wind can lift sand for a few hours; it passes, and a scarf solves most of it. In early autumn a rare storm can flood a dry river bed, which is why a local driver checks conditions before leaving the road.
Winter: warm days, cold nights
December to February is a real option. Sunny days are mild, the light is soft, and the night sky is exceptionally clear: this is the best season for stars. The price is the cold. After sunset the temperature drops fast and can approach freezing, so bring a proper warm layer and a hat. Good camps provide thick blankets and a fire; ask what is included before you book.
Summer: only if you accept the heat
From June to August daytime temperatures on the dunes are very high, often above 40°C. Trips still run, but they are planned around the heat: moving early in the morning and at sunset, resting through the middle of the day and carrying much more water. If your dates are fixed in summer, a short trip with one night in camp is more comfortable than a long trek.
Month by month at a glance
- December to February: mild days, cold nights, very clear skies, quieter camps.
- March to May: warm days, mild nights, some wind, the busiest period.
- June to August: very hot days, warm nights, the fewest visitors.
- September to November: warm days, pleasant nights, steady demand.
Wind, rain and what can change your plans
Rain is rare in the desert, but when it comes it can close a piste for a day. A good team keeps a spare half day in the programme and tells you honestly if a route has to change. Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year: camps and drivers still work, but meals and schedules shift, so tell us your dates and we will say what to expect.
Which desert, which month?
The places on a desert trip do not all peak at the same time. Here is what our own trip notes say for each of them:
- Erg Chigaga: October to April. Days are warm; nights can be cold from December to February.
- Erg Chebbi and Merzouga: March to May and September to November are the most pleasant months; winter nights are cold and summer days very hot.
- Erg Zahar and the treks from M'Hamid: walk between October and April. In summer the heat can pass 45 degrees and the treks are not run.
- The Dades and Todra gorges: spring and autumn. Winter mornings are cold and snow can close the upper Dades road.
- Skoura: spring is best, when the roses bloom in April and May.
- Ait Ben Haddou: spring and autumn are comfortable; on summer afternoons visit early or late.
On foot or by 4x4: the season matters more when you walk
A 4x4 tour can adapt to the heat by starting early and resting in the middle of the day; our five-day tour via Skoura is possible in summer with adapted timings, though very hot. A trek cannot: you walk for hours in the open, so our treks run only from October to April. If you plan to walk, choose your month first and your route second. Our guide to trekking from M'Hamid in 2 or 4 days explains what a day on foot is like.
Christmas, New Year and supplements
The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are popular, and some trips carry a supplement from 20 December to 10 January. It is shown in the price table of each trip. If your dates are flexible, early December or mid-January gives you the same clear winter skies without it; our guide to desert tour prices explains what else changes the price.
Quick answers
Is the Sahara too cold in winter?
The nights, yes; the days, no. From December to February sunny days are mild and the temperature after sunset can approach freezing, so a warm layer and a hat matter more than anything else on the packing list. Good camps provide thick blankets and a fire.
Can I go in summer?
Yes, with a short trip: one night in camp, moving early in the morning and at sunset, and resting through the middle of the day. Our treks do not run in summer.
Which months are the busiest?
March to May is the busiest period, September to November is steady, and June to August has the fewest visitors. If you want a quiet camp, ask for dates outside spring.
Does the season change the price?
Only around Christmas and New Year: some trips carry a supplement from 20 December to 10 January, shown in the price table of the trip.
Our advice
If you can choose, travel from late March to April or from October to early November. If winter is your only window, pack warm clothes and enjoy the stars. Whatever the month, the team can adjust the route and the pace to the weather. Below you will find the trip we recommend for a first night in the dunes.
